Students get to explore Minnesota history starting with the Ojibwe and Dakota Cultures, trading with the Voyageurs, preparing for battle, and taking care of resources, and looking at the state in modern times. We use the Northern Lights text put together by the Minnesota Historical Society, which allows students the chance to explore with both primary and secondary resources to learn about the history of their state.
Studying about our state provides a unique opportunity for students to experience the curriculum in person through the following field trips:
Each of these experiences bring what we read about in our textbook to life, allowing students to make connections and memories about what we’ve learned.
Additionally, the 6th grade Social Studies curriculum utilizes the Junior Achievement program to build finance skills, understand government structure, and to learn about work skills. Scheduled for April this year, 6th graders will have the opportunity to participate at Biz Town, a hands-on experience where students run a city.
