Mr. Birk did an amazing job of helping students see the big picture of participating in sports and in something bigger than yourself. He shared his story of growing up in a devout Catholic family, attending Catholic school, and then going to Harvard and not practicing his faith. It took him 8 years to find this faith again. He seemed to have it all. He was a professional football player, was making lots of money, but still he wasn't happy. It wasn't until he met his future wife and started to attend Mass on a regular basis again that he found true joy. He had two main points: Know who you are and know why you are here. He said, "You are a child of God and your purpose is to know, love, and serve God." His parting words were to keep the faith; learn it, love it, and don't leave it.
