I have been to 4 Catholic Heart Workcamps (St. Louis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Twin Cities) and they are what inspired me to work toward offering a mission trip to as many students as possible. (This is not the same trip that SMS classes of 2014 & 2015 participated in- Just 5 Days). In my experience, this is the best youth rally/mission trip that the Catholic Church has to offer.
*Students will be able to sign up and rank their preferred modes of service: working with children, working with elderly, working at soup kitchen/thrift store type places, or rehabilitating houses.
*Students will also have the opportunity to select the type of work group (usually 5-6 kids) they would like to work with (if they let me do this again- they did three years ago):
>alone with students from across the nation
>with a partner from SMS and with students from across the nation
Camps will feature daily prayer, service, and speakers, music, skits, and games as well as:
⚙Daily Morning Mass
⚙Eucharistic Adoration
⚙SMS Group Sharing Time
>>Why a mission trip? Well, one of our root beliefs is "Service is leadership." Leadership is a focus for all of our alumni as we send them out into the world to make a difference. We think it is fitting to provide an opportunity for our graduates to be leaders through service.
This experience also reinforces our core values: Lead- students will have a chance to be servant leaders through the service they do. Pray- students will have the opportunity to participate in mass and prayer opportunities. Give- students will be able to give of their time and talent to help people in need. Love- students can show the love of Christ to those they serve and work with. Learn- students can learn more about people in need, how to work in groups, and how to put one’s faith in action.
I will need 1 parent chaperones to attend for every 5 students who participate. Chaperones will be paid for- but they may be asked to provide transportation to Kansas City and to worksites during the week (or we fundraise to finance a bus) . Chaperones should have access to a vehicle that can seat 5 to 7 people. Please let me know if you are interested in chaperoning!
>>I am also looking for people to help me with fundraising- this can be different people for each fundraiser- or the same people for all fundraisers. Participation in fundraisers lowers individual fees for the trip. If we decide we would to take a bus to Kansas City- fundraising will be used to help pay for the bus expense as well.
>>We will also need people to help with organizing snacks and supplies needed for the trip. Typically, these items are donated by families or purchased with any group fundraising money we may have raised.
