Each first-grade class is taught by a Master’s level educator. Additional certified specialists instruct students in music, Spanish, physical education, technology, and library. We follow the state-mandated curriculum in all subject areas, increasing rigor and knowledge in all subject areas.
Teachers set up an environment of both large and small group instruction, and implement varied teaching strategies to reach all learners. Our small class sizes allow for individualized instruction.
MATH:
Our curriculum provides a hands-on and activity-based approach to learning mathematical concepts. Students explore numeration, addition and subtraction, fractions, geometry, measurement, time, and money. Mathematical concepts are reinforced through exploration and games.
LITERACY:
Our literacy block includes whole group, small group, and one on one instruction. During small group time, guided reading lessons are differentiated and taught at students “just right” level. Student choice is encouraged during Daily 5.
SCIENCE:
Our science curriculum focuses on observations and investigations into several scientific concepts, including sound and light. Evidence-based accounts solidify these concepts in our budding scientists.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Our curriculum begins with writing our own classroom rules. We then relate classroom rules to rules and laws in society. We also learn about maps, needs versus wants, timelines, and past versus present.
RELIGION:
First-graders focus on our mission to know, love, and serve God. We attend all school masses and participate in monthly Spirit Groups.
TECHNOLOGY:
Technology is applied to learning in the classroom setting through the student use of multimedia equipment ( iPads, etc.). Children also visit the computer lab 1-2 times each week to learn how to effectively use a computer. First-grade classrooms are also equipped with projectors and interactive whiteboards to enrich classroom lessons. Teachers are purposeful with technology experiences and encourage children to enjoy these opportunities with friends so that they build both cognitive and social skills.
ART:
First-grade students receive art instruction once a week. Much of our art is directed drawing. Directed drawings provide children with a ton of practice in following directions and paying attention to detail. Children need to listen and follow instructions closely while paying close attention to detail. Directed drawing produces great results and students see themselves as artists.
MUSIC:
Students receive instruction two-three days a week from a certified music teacher who addresses music learning standards. They participate in school concerts three times during the school year.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
First-grade students develop motor ability and cooperation skills during daily recess times. Two-three times weekly they participate in a comprehensive PE program taught by a physical education specialist. Students develop strength, flexibility, and endurance while engaging in group and individual learning.
